Marissa Swindel’s 100 Garden Initiative

NSU’s Nutrition Department at Karin C. Patel School of Osteopathic Medicine.
As a graduate student, Marissa came to UFI as a part of her preceptor rotation.

Leadership. Advocacy. Community.

The 100 garden initiative was formed as a legislative proposal to the city of Oakland Park for building gardens in homes, buildings, and businesses across the city. Marissa prepared a plan, researched the needs and anticipated effects, drew up a proposal, and presented it to the mayor and city council.

“The 100 Garden’s Initiative aims to address food insecurity, cultural and community diversity, health issues, the role nutrition can play in education, and more all while adding nutritional benefits to residents’ lives and promoting community involvement.”
